Alternative and Augmentative Communication TRAINING FOR TEACHERS
This project focuses on developing a multimedia web-based resource to support educators in effectively integrating Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems into inclusive classrooms. While AAC is essential for empowering students with Complex Communication Needs (CCN), these tools are often underutilized due to a lack of teacher training, confidence, and instructional strategies.
To address this gap, I followed a user-centered design process, beginning with extensive research and interviews with general educators, Speech-Language Pathologists, and Assistive Technology Specialists. Their insights helped identify key barriers and informed the development of the resource. I applied Mayer’s Multimedia Principles (e.g., coherence, redundancy, and segmenting) to ensure clarity and reduce cognitive overload, while grounding the design in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to offer multiple means of engagement, representation, and action/expression. This training
· Provides real-life classroom examples to support conceptual understanding
· Offers step-by-step strategies for integrating AAC into daily instruction
· Includes videos, printable visuals, and modeling scripts
· Is flexible and accessible, supporting asynchronous professional development
The resource reflects authentic classroom needs and enhances the likelihood of practical implementation. It also serves as a shared knowledge hub, scalable across districts and adaptable for varied educational contexts.
