Tink Tank is an interactive, universally designed space created to make exercise fun and engaging for children of all abilities. The project blends play, therapy, and education, transforming routine exercises into multisensory experiences that encourage active participation and joy.
Grounded in research at Setu, Ahmedabad, the design was co-developed with children, educators, and therapists to ensure inclusivity and usability. The prototype was used at Setu for over a year, where “Tink Tank Day” was celebrated every Monday—reflecting its strong adoption and impact in the intervention center.
Design Features:
Universal Design Principles: Flexible, adjustable, customizable for children with diverse physical and cognitive needs.
Multisensory Feedback: Exercises trigger auditory, tactile, and visual responses, reinforcing motivation and engagement.
Cause-and-Effect Learning: Increased exercise effort results in brighter lights, faster movement, and louder music—rewarding participation.
Four Themed Environments: Water, Jungle, Galaxy, and Springtime—each paired with targeted exercises (blowing, grip, hand-eye coordination, fine/gross motor skills).
Learning Integration: The interactive table reinforces colors, shapes, numbers, alphabets, and expressions alongside physical activity.
UX/Design Process:
User-Centered Research: Direct engagement with children and educators at Setu to define needs and constraints.
Iterative Development: Multiple cycles of testing and refining sensory feedback and exercise-to-response mechanics.
Inclusive Interaction Design: Ensured accessibility and motivation through adaptable controls, playful environments, and reward systems.
Presented internationally at the Artabilitation Conference in Denmark (2006), representing India on inclusive design for children.
Tink Tank is a universally designed interactive toy that makes exercise engaging for children of all abilities. Developed through research at Setu, Ahmedabad, it transforms therapeutic exercises into multisensory play experiences that motivate children through sound, light, and movement.
Featuring four themed environments—Water, Jungle, Galaxy, and Springtime—each linked to exercises such as grip, blowing, and motor coordination, Tink Tank reinforces both physical skills and cognitive learning (colors, shapes, numbers, alphabet, expressions). The more children engage, the stronger the sensory feedback becomes, creating a playful cause-and-effect system.
