CONNECTING WITH PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY
As part of my commitment to cultivating empathy and inclusive mindsets in young learners, I designed and implemented a 45-minute disability awareness lesson for students in grades 3 to 5. This lesson was rooted in fostering ethical, inclusive, and respectful behavior particularly when engaging with individuals with disabilities.
The session promoted critical thinking around the concepts of ability, difference, and social inclusion. Through interactive discussion, multimedia content, and guided reflection, students explored their perceptions, learned about visible and invisible disabilities, and practiced respectful communication.
To extend their learning students created video reflections at the end of the lesson. These digital artifacts allowed students to reflect on what they learned about inclusion and empathy and demonstrate their understanding through multimodal expression and scaffolding learning with tools for reflection, creation, collaboration and sharing
